Infants and Toddlers - ages 0 to 3

Can infants show withdrawal symptoms?

  • Yes, some infants have shown symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. This can include seizures, sleeping disorders, upset stomachs and extreme fussiness. An infant may become over stimulated and may be distracted by noise and distractions, which causes frustration and irritability.

What can I do for an infant with FAS or FAE?
It is important to have early intervention to improve the child’s condition.

To avoid over stimulation of an infant:

  • Keep lights low
  • Keep noise levels low
  • Introduce stimuli gradually
  • Calming techniques can be used like giving warm baths or showers, swaddling, or rocking. Minimize distractions by having less clutter.
  • Have a bedtime routine
  • Learn child’s eating habits
  • Visit health care professional regularly. Concerns for a child with FAS/FAE include vision, hearing, dental, cognitive, motor, and language development.

Can my child benefit from an Early Intervention Plan?

  • The Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) is for children birth to age three and their families. Services can be provided for specific health and learning needs.
